Our EMT program is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in pre-hospital emergency care. It prepares students to handle emergencies utilizing skills learned in class, grounded in both evidence-based medicine (EBM) and competency-based education (CBE). By integrating the latest research, clinical guidelines, and best practices, our program ensures that students develop a solid foundation in prehospital care while demonstrating competency in essential emergency medical skills.

The EMT program follows the 2021 National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards and prepares students to function in three key areas:

  1. Managing Life-Threatening Emergencies with Evidence-Based Interventions. Students will develop critical lifesaving skills by utilizing the latest evidence-based medical protocols for emergency situations.
  2. Stabilizing Non-Life-Threatening Conditions with Patient-Centered Care. Beyond critical interventions, EMTs must be proficient in handling a range of non-life-threatening emergencies with an emphasis on evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies.
  3. Mastering Essential Non-Medical Skills for Professional EMS Practice. A well-rounded EMT must also develop skills beyond direct patient care including documentation, interpersonal communication and effectively work in a team environment with paramedics, nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals.

By emphasizing competency-based education, our program ensures that students demonstrate proficiency in essential skills before advancing, producing highly capable EMTs who are fully prepared for the demands of prehospital care. We go beyond the standard curriculum and minimum hourly requirements by integrating evidence-based medicine into every aspect of training. This approach ensures that students not only understand current medical guidelines but also develop the ability to apply research-supported interventions in real-world emergencies. By requiring mastery of each skill before progression, our competency-driven framework reinforces both clinical expertise and critical decision-making, producing confident and adaptable emergency care providers.

Students are required to bring an electronic device to every class to facilitate learning and engagement with course materials. This device must be either a tablet or a laptop. It must also be capable of performing essential academic functions, including browsing the internet, accessing and submitting assignments through Google Classroom, viewing digital course materials, and participating in any online activities or assessments as required by the instructor.

Please note that smartphones do not meet the requirements for an acceptable device. Additionally, NBEMS will not provide electronic devices for student use, so it is the responsibility of each student to ensure they have a functional and fully charged device for every class session.

Additionally, students must wear the designated uniform for all classes and clinical experiences once issued. The uniform includes:

  • A polo shirt (provided)
  • A navy or black undershirt with no logos (not provided)
  • Navy blue tactical pants (not provided)
  • A black belt (not provided)
  • Black uniform boots (not provided)
